Emerging Leaders
You're already in it!
The co-curricular Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is designed to educate, engage and empower all Detroit Mercy students. Using the “Social Change Model (jpg),” (Long Description of Social Change Model) the ELP offers students the opportunity to explore their leadership potential and abilities through involvement in programs, events and activities that include learning, leadership, spirituality and service, on and off campus.
All Detroit Mercy students have the chance to experience and live the University Mission. As a student who lives Detroit Mercy's Mission, you will learn to exhibit leadership for the common good. Those students who choose to intentionally develop their leadership capacity will be recognized for their achievements by earning a Leadership Pin or a Leadership Medallion.
Students often exhibit leadership on campus in both formal and informal ways. You are likely already doing a number of things that fall within the categories of the above criteria for leadership development within Detroit Mercy's Conceptual Model for Social Change. This means that you are also meeting the criteria for the Emerging Leaders Program!
The Institute for Leadership & Service will give you recognition for the work you are doing, while encouraging you to excel and experience further leadership development opportunities to become leaders who serve the community. Recognition will be in the form of the Leadership Pin or the Leadership Medallion.

FAQs
Q: What should I do to obtain the Pin and/or Medallion when I am about to graduate? A: Pin & Medallion: After completing the requirements please notify ELP of your intention to obtain a Medallion or Pin and a Reflection Essay to elp@udmery.edu. {Medallion Only} After submitting your Reflection Essay, an Institute Steering Committee Member will contact you to schedule for the Group Reflection Session.
Q: I am graduating in May, when do I apply for the Pin and/or Medallion? A: In order to receive the Leadership Pin or Medallion at the Honors Convocation in March, you must submit an email of your intent to receive them by February 15th
Q: Do I have to have all of my requirements met by the above deadlines? A: No, you must have emailed your intent by February 15th so that we can track of any missing requirements and get them in as fast as possible. All of your requirements, including a reflection essay, must be done by March 15th
Q: Why does the essay have to be turned in so early? The semester is just starting? A: In order to include the names of the awardees in the Honors Convocation program, which happens in March, the early deadline is required.
Q: How long does my reflection essay have to be? A: Most essays are approximately three to four pages double-spaced typed. The essay should answer the reflection questions about what you have learned in each of the five areas about and how it enhanced your capacity to lead. The questions can be found on this page.
Q: When will the Group Reflection sessions occur for the Medallion awardees? A: The sessions will be scheduled during the last week of February.
Q: What happens if I do NOT complete the requirements or the essay in time? A: You will not be awarded the recognition (pin or medallion) at the scheduled event. But, you can still earn them at a later date upon completion of all requirements. Hopefully, you can earn them before graduation so that you can wear your pin or medallion with your cap and gown.
Q: Do I have to have someone review my requirements and sign off on them? A: Your service hours need to be signed off for on the Service Verification Form. The form can be found on this ELP page. This documentation is required because this helps the university get recognized with The President's Higher Education Community Service award. Any of the events, activities, or workshops you attend will be accepted on the honor’s system. Your participation in University groups is documented elsewhere on campus and will be used as a cross reference.
Q: What if I did my service hours during my earlier years at Detroit Mercy or before I was involved in the Emerging Leaders Program? A: No problem. All your service hours conducted at Detroit Mercy count towards the awards. Also, if your hours were part of Service Learning Courses, they will be in the Institute database and we can pull those out for you. If you were involved in service outside of the school you may want to send an e-mail to the director of the program and ask them to confirm your participation by signing a Service Verification Form.
Q: Where do I log all of this information for Emerging Leaders Program? A: There are currently 3 ways to log.
