Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ’s accelerated option offered by the College of Liberal Arts & Education now allows community college transfer students to earn their Bachelor of Social Work in approximately one year starting summer 2024.

The Full-time Accelerated Social Work Transfer (FAST) option is the first of its kind in Michigan. The program features three consecutive semesters of seven-week modules and intersession courses that can be taken online, in-person or through a hybrid method. The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

“This is the only scheduling option of its kind in Michigan for community college transfer students,” said Janet Joiner, Detroit Mercy Department of Social Work chair. “We continue to offer our regular semester scheduling option for those who want a traditional academic experience, but our new BSW FAST scheduling option provides students with access to quality, flexible, undergraduate social work education that allows them to do more in less time.”

FAST’s module format makes it possible to complete the bachelor of Social Work program more quickly than traditional programs. Students enrolled in the program can also explore worksite placements and limited online field educational experiences, based on agency availability.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for social workers in 2021 was $50,390 annually. Employment of social workers is projected to grow by 9% from 2021-2031, a faster-than-average rate for all occupations.

A Zoom information session is scheduled for the following date: Monday, April 8 from 5-6:30 p.m.
