Bioinformatics Minor
Description
Bioinformatics is a new and rapidly evolving discipline that has emerged from the fields of molecular biology and computer science. Bioinformatics is being used in many different areas such as molecular medicine, preventative medicine, gene therapy, drug development, waste cleanup, climate change, alternative energy sources, biotechnology, antibiotic resistance, forensic analysis of microbes, bio-weapon prevention, evolutionary studies, crop improvement, insect resistance, nutritional quality, and more.

Bioinformatics Minor Requirements - 18 credits
The minor in Bioinformatics consists of 18 credits (six classes) balanced between computer science and biology. All of the courses are taken from the current offerings of computer science and biology. The required courses are listed below. Due to the multiple levels of prerequisites, students are encouraged to discuss courses early with the minor advisor.
- CSSE 3540* Database Systems (3 credits)
- CSSE 4610 Introduction to Data Mining (3 credits)
- BIO 1040 Fundamentals of Bioinformatics or CSSE 4620 Introduction to Bioinformatics (3 credits)
- BIO 1200 General Biology I (3 credits)
- BIO 2700** Genetics (3 credits)
- BIO 3201 Applied Metagenomics or BIO 4740 Cellular and Molecular Biology (3 credits)
* Students must also take CSSE 1710 Intro to Programming 1 (3 credits), which is a prerequisites for CSSE 3540. Students are also encouraged to take CSSE 1720 Intro to Programming II.
** Students may have an additional prerequisite of BIO 1220. Discuss with your advisor.
Additional Policies:
At most, six credits may be counted toward both a student's major and minor. At most, three credits may be counted towards two separate minors. At least nine credits will be upper division (3000+ level) courses and no courses will be taken on a pass/fail basis. A minimum of 12 credits (or four courses) will be taken at Detroit Mercy unless the courses are taken as part of a consortium agreement.
Students must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average in all minor courses in order for the minor to be earned and posted on the official transcript at the time of graduation. Prerequisites must be satisfied if a course has them.
