Biography
Michael Barry came to Detroit Mercy in 1994. His areas of interest and specialization are 20th-century American prose literature and the application of translation studies and hermeneutical theories to literary study. In all of his classes, he strives to defamiliarize the familiar and to show students the depths of important works of literature that have transcended generations. He believes that literature can wake us up to life that we might ordinarily miss.
He has published articles on Michael Ondaatje, Abraham Cahan, Bobbie Ann Mason, John Steinbeck, Ann Petry, Robert Penn Warren and Ernest J. Gaines. Years ago, he taught in China and in Turkey. Barry earned his Ph.D. from State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo. Previously, he has served as chair of the Department of English.
