AIME and HEX Program
What is Academic Interest and Major Exploration (AIME) and Health Exploration (Health Ex)?
Detroit Mercy offers the University College: Academic Interest and Major Exploration, or AIME program for any student who wishes to explore majors. Health Exploration is an extension of the AIME program, and is designed for students exploring any major that would prepare you for a career in any health profession.
AIME/HEX's specialized advisors are familiar with the requirements for all degrees and programs offered at Detroit Mercy. You may have a specific major in mind or you may be exploring a number of options; in any case, your advisors will assist in keeping you on track toward your goals.
You also have the benefit of activities designed to support your success at Detroit Mercy. Some of these services, programs and events are outlined below:
- Regular meetings with an advisor who is familiar with all the academic programs at the University.
- Regular meetings with a college life coach who will personally get to know you and your specific challenges and opportunities to achieve your goals.
- Study time with FREE TUTORING at the Student Success Center. Tutors are current students who have successfully completed the classes you will be taking. As your tutors, they provide homework help, clarify course material and provide study tips and advice.
- UAS 1000, Success Skills, a "College 101" class that will help you navigate the challenges of the first year in college and provide the opportunity to explore different majors and careers.
- Informative and fun opportunities including library workshops, pet therapy, and other social events.

How long will I be in the AIME or HEX program?
Students will work with their AIME or HEX advisor while completing the necessary prerequisites for the program they are exploring. Typically, our students work with us for up to three semesters before matriculating into the major they will graduate from. -

Does being in AIME or HEX add time to my degree plan?
No, it does not add time to your degree. You will take the same classes you would if directly admitted into the program you are exploring with the additional requirement of UAS 1000 – Success Skills I (one-credit course). -

Are there any requirements for the AIME or HEX program?
Yes, you still must meet the minimum university admission requirements. You will also be required to take a one-credit course called UAS 1000 – Success Skills. This course will introduce and reinforce strategies to improve skills such as note-taking, reading textbooks and preparing for exams to promote academic success. This will include practical experience in successful study strategies such as time management, academic and career exploration. This course will also acquaint you with other strategies, behaviors and resources for a successful academic and social experience here at Detroit Mercy and beyond. -

We can also help connect you with other resources also housed in the SSC, including tutoring and college life coaching. -

I’m not happy with my SAT or ACT scores. Do I have the option of taking a placement test?
If you are not satisfied with your SAT or ACT score, students have the option to take the placement tests. Students can access the placements from home using the Learning Management System (LMS) Blackboard.
